IS IT NECESSARY TO PRUNE YOUR HOUSEPLANTS

It is necessary to prune your houseplants in order that they can continue to grow and maintain their shape and to prevent disease by clipping damaged and dieing stems. Having houseplants is such a delightful way to decorate your home. Just by giving the proper care and attention they are likely to be around your home for a long time to come.

It is always best that you check that you are pruning your houseplants the right way. Make certain that there are not any broken branches. Any broken branches on your plants are likely to take the energy away from the living parts of the plants.

When pruning your houseplants make sure that you have the right tool, ideally a sharp clipper or small gardening shears. Remove all the branches that appear weak to ensure the quality of your plants. If you are going to prune quite a few plants at the same time, it may be wise to clean your shears after each use by dipping them into bleach for a few seconds. This will ultimately prevent the spread of any disease that you houseplants may have.

Remove any of the stems or branches that cross through the centre of the plants. This will enable the air the completely circulate though the plants to minimise any change of fungal disease. You should also remove any over grown or messy growth that does not fit in with your houseplants. By cutting back the tall stems you will find that you will have much healthier growth for your plants.

Alternatively, keep you plants in good shape by frequently pinching rather than an all out pruning task. This will allow you to keep you houseplants looking nice. If you check your plants on a regular occurrence this will make sure that you are not missing any leaves or stems that need to be removed. You will find that by keeping a watchful eye on your houseplants, you will be able to keep them alive and healthier for longer.

Make sure that you read up on the maintenance requirements that are needed for any particular houseplant as this will make it much easier to care for them. Simply keep your plants well pruned and in the right area will enhance their ability to have the proper growth. By continuing to prune your houseplants will make sure that they continue to grace your home with their beauty.

When transplants are tricky (South Bend Tribune)
I have two indoor plants, a schefflera and a ficus, which are about 17 feet tall. They both started out 20 years ago as typical supermarket plants. I have transplanted them a couple of times into large pots, the last time about 10 years ago.
